Number of pensioners, down by 51,000 in Romania

The number of pensioners dropped by 51,000 last year, reaching 5.3 million.

The average pension rose by 5.4%, however, reaching RON 892 (EUR 200), according to the National Statistics Institute (INS).

The ratio of pensioners versus employees reached 1 to 1 at national level, meaning that one active employee supports one pensioner. Bucharest had five pensioners to ten employees whereas in Giurgiu county the ratio reached 17 pensioners to 10 employees.

In Bucharest, the average value of pension reached EUR 251.4 whereas in Giurgiu the average pension totaled EUR 159.3.

About 608,200 people got the minimum pension of RON 400 (EUR 89.6) granted to everybody who is part of the public pension system, no matter how low their contributions had been while they were working.
