Less than half of Romania is on Facebook, and Bucharest ranks first among local cities based on number of users, according to recent data. But the number of local Facebook users more than tripled in four years.

The number of Romanian users on Facebook reached 7.6 million at the beginning of 2015, up more than three times from the 2.4 million in January 2011 according to data from Facebrands.ro and Facebrands PRO, which centralize information about Facebook use in Romania. In 2014, the number of Romanian Facebook users increased by 8.75%.

The number of users registered a constant growth in the last years, from 2.4 million in January 2011, to 4.4 million in early-2012, 5.59 million at the beginning of 2013, 7 million in January 2014 and 7.6 million in January this year.

Bucharest ranks first among Romanian cities by number of Facebook users - namely 1.48 million people, or 21.97% of the total, followed by Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, Iasi and Constanta.

The number of Romanian pages created on Facebook also increased last year, from 23,755 in early-2014 to 26,785 at the beginning of this year. There were over 15,000 Romanian pages on Facebook in 2012 and 19,788 in 2013.

Most of the Romanian pages on Facebook are from categories such as local business - 2,880, art and culture – 1,672, health and personal care – 1,495, online stores – 1,487, singers and bands – 1,319 and blogs – 1,159.
