The number of people with overdue debts to banks and nonbanking financial institutions reached almost 636,000 in December last year, up by about 20,500 compared to the previous month, according to Romania’s National Bank (BNR).

The figure includes people who were more than 30 days behind on their loan payments.

The value of the overdue debts amounted to RON 8 billion (EUR 1.77 billion) at the end of December, down 6.5% compared to the previous month. Of the total debts, over EUR 655 million were in national currency lei, some EUR 764 million in euro, and the remaining amount were in in other foreign currencies.

Based on the debt category, debts more than 90 days overdue totaled some EUR 980 million, more than half of the total. The debts between 61 and 90 days reached EUR 12.1 million.

The total value of loans put off the balance sheets exceeded EUR 334 million, and the overdue debts managed by debt recovery firms stood at EUR 436 million.
