Number of students in Romania continues to drop

The number of students in Romania decreased by 18,700 to 3.58 million, in the 2017-2018 school year, following a drop of 45,300 in the previous year, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INS).

Even though there were more students registered in universities and vocational schools last year compared to a year before, the number of students in the latter category remained the lowest, at 90,200, representing only 2.5% of the total number of students.

The biggest decrease was in primary and secondary education (17,500), followed by high-schools (13,100 fewer students). Almost 47% of students were in primary and secondary schools, while about one third were in high-school and pre-school. More than 71% studied in urban areas.

The number of students in universities reached 538,900 in the 2017-2018 school year. The highest share in total number of university students studied business, administration and law (almost 24%), while 21% studied engineering, manufacturing and construction.
