Over 1 million foreign tourists visit Romania in the first half of this year
More than 1.09 million foreign tourists checked into Romanian hotels and guesthouses in the first six months of this year, 12% more compared to the same period of 2015. More than 80% of them came from other European countries, according to Romania’s National Statistics Institute (INS).
Germany, Italy and Israel remained the main sources of incoming tourists, followed by France, the UK, US, and Hungary, statistics show.
The number of tourists from Germany went up by 7.2%, to almost 120,000, while the number of tourists from Italy increased by 13.5%, to 108,800, and the visitors from Israel were up by 13%, to over 100,000.
The number of British tourists went up by 16.3%, to almost 67,000, surpassing the number of American tourists. Romanian hotels also welcomed 25% more Bulgarian tourists, 41% more Greeks, and 39% more Ukrainians.
The total number of tourists who checked into local hotels in the first six months was 4.49 million, up by 11.6% compared to the first half of 2015. Three-quarters of them were Romanian tourists. The number of overnight stays was 8.8% higher year-on-year, at 9.42 million.
