One of the largest afforestation campaigns in Romania: 1,500 volunteers plant 40,000 trees in one day
Some 1,500 volunteers from all over Romania planted 40,000 trees over a surface of 10 hectares in a remote village in Bistrita-Nasaud county, in central Romania. The action, which took place on Saturday, March 21, is part of one of the largest private afforestation campaigns in Romania.
The campaign, called Padurea Transilvania (the Transylvania Forrest), is coordinated by Tasuleasa Social, a local non-profit organization, and sponsored by Banca Transilvania.
In March 2014, the campaign managed to draw 1,400 volunteers to plant another 10 hectares of land in the same region. Almost nine in ten trees planted then managed to survive, according to the organizers.
The Budeasa-Fanate village, which they chose for this campaign, has the lowest forest area in Transylvania, of only 4%.
On March 14, 2015, some 250 volunteers coordinated by the Tasuleasa Social organization planted another 2 hectares of forest in Timis county.
