One third of Romanians keep savings at home on lack of trust in banks

03 June 2014

One third of Romanians who live in urban areas prefer to keep their money at home as they do not trust banks, according to the National Readership Study issued by the Romanian Circulation Audit Bureau BRAT, quoted by Agerpres newswire.

The result was worse than in 2006, well ahead of the financial crisis, when just a quarter of Romanians kept their savings at home. However, the most recent survey found that another third do keep their money in banks, because they trust them.

The percentage however is down compared to 2006, when it was at 43 percent. Around half of Romanians trust only large banks, down from 71 percent in 2006.
