Opposition gains power as leader Victor Ponta nominated to create new Government in Romania
Romanian Social Democratic Party leader Victor Ponta was designated to create the new Government, after the previous Government was toppled in the Parliament earlier today (April 27 ). This means the country's opposition, the Social Liberal Union (USL), which includes the PSD, has become the ruling group, sending the Democratic Liberal Party to opposition.
Ponta will have to create a new Government and submit it to the Parliament vote, most probably as early as next week. President Traian Basescu nominated Ponta, the only proposal that came from the country's political parties on Friday, during political consultations between the president and the parties.
Earlier in March, Traian Basescu had said Ponta was not mature enough to run the Government, not while he was head of the country. However, the political circumstances, with PDL already in minority in the Parliament, triggered the decision, commentators say.
Analysts expect the new Government to be made of members of the National Liberal Party (PNL), PSD and the Conservative Party (PC), which create the USL.
Romania's Government was topped after a vote of no confidence in the Parliament on Friday (April 27 ), when 235 MPs voted against the government run by Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, that was only two months and a half into office.
