Western Romania: Oradea to place 100 containers for collecting textile waste

30 June 2023

Officials in Oradea, in western Romania, recently announced that one hundred containers for collecting textile waste will be placed around the city.

This initiative aims to promote recycling and the proper management of textile waste. “Currently, in Oradea, the waste management delegation contract does not include textile waste. If a person wants to dispose of textile waste, they either take them to the two collection centers located on Thurzo Sandor Street and Uzinelor Street or if not, they have to throw them in the household waste. In this latter case, it is an extra burden because it is deposited in the landfill, for which we have to pay the circular economy fee, storage fee, and so on,” said Oradea mayor Florin Birta in a conference, cited by G4Media.

The project is done in partnership with the Philanthropy Association Oradea and a specialized textile waste collection company. Each of the two will install a special type of container for clothes and footwear in 50 locations in the city of Oradea. The containers will be placed in the waste storage enclosures in residential areas and in various other locations in suburban areas.

According to mayor Birta, there are already 25 requests from tenant associations and companies for such containers. The collection and pickup of textile waste from the dedicated containers will be done free of charge, without any expense to the municipality or citizens.

After being refurbished, these textile waste items can be reused in various situations. “A significant amount of what would end up in the landfill will no longer be deposited there through the collection of these waste items, and gradually, we will approach the targets for selective collection that are asked of us,” the mayor concluded.
