Orange launches online service to send mobile credit to and from Romania

29 January 2014

Telecom operator Orange has launched a service which allows customers to credit any pre-paid card from abroad, a service which is also available for Romanian numbers.

The new service, called Top-Up is available online in five languages (English, French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese) and three currencies (euros, US dollars and South-African rand).

It targets those who live or work abroad and who want to send mobile credit to friends of families back home.

To send mobile credit to a contact, users have to enter the mobile number to be credited, select an amount and pay by credit card. A text message is sent to the user to confirm the transaction and a personal message can be sent to the recipient to let them know their account has been topped-up.

The site enables users to top-up credit for customers of over 350 operators based in over 100 countries, including 18 countries in which Orange is present. From launch, Orange Top-Up accepts credit cards from 39 different countries. Romania is both among the destination, and target countries for this new service. This means somebody who lives abroad can send credit to a number in Romania, and somebody who lives in Romania can send credit to a mobile number abroad using his credit card issued in Romania. The full list of countries covered by the new service is below.

Orange Top-Up was launched by Orange Horizons, the group’s subsidiary that seeks out new business opportunities in countries where Orange is not already present as a mass-market telecommunications provider.

Orange Romania recorded revenues of EUR 241 million in the third quarter of 2013, a year-on-year increase of 3.2 percent, while the number of customers also went up to slightly more than 10.3 million.
