Oslo Police start evicting 100 people from Roma camp

20 November 2012

The Oslo Police have started forcibly removing up to 100 Roma people from a camp close to Sognsvann lake in Norway, after a local court allowed the plot owner to evacuate the 30 tents put up on his land. According to Norwegian media, the Roma come from Romania, and they are allowed to live in Norway, but the local law only allows camping for 48 hours. Many of the evicted Roma come from the county of Buzau.

The situation, which has affected other European countries before, is also a cause debate in Norway. Right wing politicians support sending the Roma back home, saying everyone who comes to Norway and looks for automatic support should be sent back home. On the other hand, humanitarian organizations highlight the discrimination the Roma face across Europe and their poor situation at home, which drove them abroad. Some of the Roma already left the camp and authorities don't know where they moved. Temperatures in Oslo can reach minus 25 degrees Celsius at night during winter.
