Over 12.5 mln Romanians live in cities
About 12.5 million people lived in Romania’s urban areas on January 1, 2015, and 9.7 million lived in villages. The urban population amounted to 56.4%, down 0.1% from January 2014.
The number of Romanians who live in cities decreased by 50,700 year-on-year, while villages also lost 16,300 inhabitants, according to the National Institute of Statistics.
With its 2.1 million inhabitants, Bucharest hosted 16.7% of the urban population and 9.4% of the country’s population. Iasi comes next, with 357,000 people, Timisoara - with 333,000, Cluj-Napoca with 322,000 and Constanta with 319,000.
