Over half of all households in Romania, namely 55.8 percent, have a computer at home, over 70 percent of them being located in urban areas, according to the recent data published by the National Statistics Office (INS).

Almost three quarters of the households located in the Bucharest-Ilfov region have a computer at home, while the lowest shares were recorded in the South-Muntenia region, where some 49 percent of the total households own a computer, the North-East region (50.3 percent) and the Center region (51.3 percent).

Some 60 percent of all people aged between 17 and 74 have used a computer at least once, shows the INS.

A computer is used by 86.9 percent of the young people aged between 16 and 24, over half of those with ages between 45 and 54, while only 16.8 percent of the people aged between 65-74 use a computer.  However, people aged 25-34 are also important computer users, with a share of 78.9 percent.

Almost 53 percent of the households in Romania have access to the internet at home, over 73 percent of them being located in the urban areas.

In the Bucharest-Ilfov region, 72.5 percent of the households have access to the internet, followed by West and North-West regions with 58.3 percent and 56.9 percent respectively, South-East (51.2 percent) and Center (49.5 percent).

The most types of connection used to access the internet are the fixed broadband connections - with a share of 95.3 percent, followed at a large distance by mobile broadband and narrowband connections.

Over 57 percent of the total people aged between 16 and 74 have used the internet, shows the INS data.
