Overall energy production falls in Q1 in Romania, but wind power doubles on last year

The amount of main primary energy resources totaled 9,979 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) in the first four months of 2013, down 1,372 million toe over last year, according to Romania's National Statistics Institute (INS).

Domestic production reached 7,287 million toe – a 6.1 percent fall on January to April last year. Meanwhile imports decreased by 25 percent to some 2,692 million toe in total.

Power resources were 20,392 billion kWh, down by 701 million kWh, or 3.3 percent, on the first four months last year.

Production of conventional power plants amounted to 9,240 billion kWh, 20.3 percent lower than last year and nuclear power production fell slightly to 4,042 billion kWh. However hydropower production increased to reach 5,069 billion kWh, 26.1 percent up on January to April 2012 and wind power production doubled to total 1,817 billion kWh.

Electricity consumption fell by 3.7 percent year-on-year to 17,164 billion kWh. Public lighting consumption decreased by 8.6 percent, while household consumption fell by 1.3 percent.

Electricity exports totaled 440.6 million kWh, a decrease of 50.7 million kWh, or 10.3 percent on the first four months in 2012.
