Romania creates Parliament Commission to change national security laws

19 April 2018

The Romanian Parliament created on Wednesday, April 18, a special commission tasked with reviewing all changes to the national security laws.

The newly set up commission is run by social democrat MP Gabriel Vlase, local Mediafax reported.

Prior to the Parliament decision, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis had asked the Parliament to work with other institutions when changing national security laws. A bad scenario would be for the Social Democrat Party PSD to force changes to such laws by taking over control of all state institutions, said the President.

The commission has five PSD members, and eight members from other parties or minorities.

The ruling coalition made up of PSD and ALDE have been waging war against the so-called “shadow state” in the past year. Current and former heads of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI0 have been called in recent months to answer to a special parliamentary committee about the service’s alleged involvement in local politics.
