Penny Market opens 14 new stores in Romania this month

Retailer Rewe Romania has opened 14 new Penny Market stores in December, reaching a network of 200 units at national level.

The first four openings already took place in Baia Mare (Maramures county), Apahida (Cluj), Pucioasa (Dambovita), and Valea lui Mihai (Bihor). Between December 19 and 22, Penny Market will open four other stores in Bucharest, Alba Iulia, Botosani, and Deva, reports local Profit.ro.

After Christmas, the retailer will open another six stores in six counties, namely Arad, Brasov, Hunedoara, Ilfov, Giurgiu, Caras Severin. It will also reopen the store XXL Mega Discount in Brasov under the Penny Market format.

Besides the Penny Market stores, Rewe Romania also owns eight XXL Mega Discount stores. They will be closed on December 31 and, in 2017, six of them will be reopened under the Penny Market brand. The group will give up the XXL Mega Discount stores in Sibiu and Galati.

Rewe Romania’s turnover recorded a 13.8% increase last year, reaching EUR 597 million. The company’s net profit advanced by 13% to EUR 2.9 million.

Rewe Romania is part of German group Rewe. The group sold the Billa Romania supermarket network to French group Carrefour in 2015.
