PM: There are 10.8 million Romanians who do not pay contributions for health

27 August 2010

There are 10.8 million people who do not pay contributions for health in Romania, which is why the country needs to broaden the tax base for those who, so far, have not contributed, while they were involved in economic activities, Prime Minister Emil Boc (in picture) has said. "Everyone asks why there are not enough money for a particular area. Well, you must know, for example, that there are 10.8 million Romanians who do not pay contributions for health, but want good performance in the system. That's why we need to broaden the tax base for those who did not contributed, but carried out economic activities. Of course, those who were used not to pay these things are not at all happy, but now they will have to pay," said Emil Boc in an interview with Radio Romania Actualitati.

The head of the Government has argued that many people took advantage of the intellectual property contracts as a way to avoid paying social security contributions. He underlined that the law on benefits of copyright have been applied improperly, even the drivers and the mechanics benefiting of such rights, instead of only the artists and creators. "Now, we tighten the screw and we say: brothers, everyone must abide. Those who are really artists and really come under the scope of copyright will definitely continue to benefit from the law, while those who try to use it to avoid paying their contributions to the state will not be able to do that anymore," Boc said. The PM also mentioned that, no matter that the country faces economic crisis, the act of culture must be supported and culture must not be marginalized in society.
