Romania's PM Victor Ponta (in picture, right) will propose a clarification of the country's constitution on who should represent Romania at EU meetings. Among many other disagreements, there was a row last year between PM Ponta and President Traian Basescu (in picture, left) over which of them should attend an EU summit. Victor Ponta said he wants Romania to be represented by the Prime Minister and that this should be a definitive decision, backed by the country's constitution.

The PM reported that he had discussed the idea with the President and the heads of the two chambers. According to Mr Ponta, President Basescu replied “You can do what you want when I'm gone.”

The PM's comments suggest that currently there is no definitive answer to the question of the country's representation. He added that Romania's Constitutional Court is powerless to make a decision without clarification of the Constitution itself. PM Ponta also said that his political ally and head of the senate Crin Antonescu had already agreed the proposal.
