Police report racially motivated attack on two Romanians in the UK

08 February 2013

Two young Romanian men have been beaten up in what the Police think it was a racially motivated attack in UK town Brighton. The two suspects in the incident reportedly asked the 21 and 27-year old Romanians about their nationality before attacking them. The Romanians live in nearby Eastbourne and they were waiting for a bus after a night out in Brighton when the attack occurred, sometime between 03:00 and 03:30, according to the local police.

A spokesperson for the police said that they did not have an accurate description of the two attackers, but that they knew that both were white, around 1.8 meters tall and were accompanied by two women. The police say they are treating the incident, which happened during the early hours of January 25, as a racially aggravated assault.

“There is no CCTV footage of the incident and, at this time, no independent witnesses have come forward. If anyone has information, or witnessed what happened, then we would ask them to call the police as soon as possible,” said the police spokesperson, quoted by local news service Brighton and Hove News.

This comes on the background of heated discussions about the expected migration of Romanians to the UK once the restrictions are lifted, in 2014. British media and British politicians have been asking for the restrictions to be kept  in order to protect their internal market from Romanian and Bulgarian immigrants, while also trying to deter them from coming to the UK.
