Former PM Ponta: EU Commissioner Creţu would make good candidate for RO presidency

09 January 2019

Former prime minister Victor Ponta, now the president of the Pro Romania party, would like to see EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Creţu among his party’s candidates for the EU Parliament elections.

“We would be very happy if Corina Creţu decided to run again, because she hasn’t decided yet. Secondly, if she decided, if we would convince her to run on our list. I think any party in Romania would like to have a European commissioner on its list,” Ponta said, quoted by Agerpres.

The former PM also sees Creţu as a good candidate for the presidential elections.

“She would make a strong candidate first of all because she is about ten times more social democrat that [e.n current Social Democrat Party (PSD) leader] Dragnea,” Ponta explained. He also argued that Creţu has better knowledge of Europe and connections that president Klaus Iohannis.

Creţu explained in December she was still a member of the PSD "if they didn't exclude me," Adevarul reported.

The presidential elections will be held towards the end of this year, in November or December.

Current President Klaus Iohannis already announced his decision to run and the National Liberal Party (PNL) said it would support his bid. Former technocrat PM Dacian Cioloș said this summer he did not rule out a presidential bid in 2019. The ruling Social Democrat Party (PSD) did not announce a candidate yet but party leader Liviu Dragnea said at the end of lasy year he wanted PSD and its coalition partner ALDE to have one candidate.

European Commissioner says she won’t take any more insults from Romanian Govt.
