President: Romania is on the brink of the abyss, at risk to be isolated

15 January 2014

Romanian president Traian Basescu recently said that Romania is on the 'brink of the abyss' and if the political majority continues to attack the rule of law, the country risks to be isolated for a long time.

“We are on the brink of the abyss, and if we’ll continue, or if the parliamentary majority led by the prime-minister and Mr. Crin Antonescu continue to attack the courts’ decisions, the correct legislation under which justice operates, we risk entering a long period of isolation,” said Basescu.

The president also stated that the recent “unfortunate statements” of the Romanian Prime Minister are also bad for Romania.

“Trying to say ‘Basescu’s justice’ or ‘servants of Basescu’ doesn’t convince anyone and it shows, also confirmed by statements, that as soon as they can, these people will move to the demolition of the independent justice system in Romania. This is a concern for our partners,” said the president.

Traian Basescu also stated that in terms of credibility, Romania returned to the year 2000, due to the actions against the justice and the rule of law.

He mentioned that Romania has received the message that measures will be taken for not respecting the rule of law.
