Indeed, it is true, Italians have at their very heart the continuous search for beauty in all their expressions. Whether it is a beautifully proportioned Palladian villa, or an elegant garden, a Venetian’s Murano glass or a beautiful painting depicting Venus with Cupid. We do like beautifulness in all its expressions... including women, of course, a glass of wine or a meal. Perhaps, we (Italians) can possibly be a little bit vain or rather proud. And “seldomly”, we are confidently showing it with our clothes. Oh yes, we do that… A lot! 

For Italians, it is a way of showing and boosting our confidence at the same time. A person that is wearing a suit must wear it with confidence, even if we have some imperfections. Not arrogantly but in a “natural” way. We have been doing so pretty much since Roman times and, we have never stopped liking it.

As a child, I always remembered my grandparents elegantly dressed in that subtle, almost understated way, that is the essence of being elegant. 

The dearest visions of my two grandfathers is still very vivid. Nonno Giovanni was very fashionable with a beautiful double-breasted suit in light camel beige, he was always wearing a fedora style hat and his shoes hand made by a shoemaker from the south of Italy. I remember when he had a pair of sandals hand made in off white leather for the summer... all the family were talking and admiring them. Nonno Luigi had a more conservative style, often wearing grey in different shades and patterns with a white or light blue shirt. I often recall him wearing a two-button “Principe di Galles” (Glen Plaid) and black shoes. With my first salary, I bought him a beautiful scarf in the iconic beige check jacquard style. His surprised smile is still with me after all these years. 

It was the smile of my grandparents and their elegant self-consciousness that drew me to the world of menswear and opening of a truly Italian Menswear boutique in Bucharest. At T. Peccini you can choose to have a made to measure suit or a jacket, the choice is between the Neapolitan or Roman style. Both are very beautiful and with their peculiar differences. 

A Neapolitan suit is like a second layer of skin, it is light and soft to the contour of the body, it is made to naturally fit the body shape of the person so to offer comfort. The jacket is characterised by either a “spalla a camicia” (shirt sleeve shoulder) following the natural shape of the shoulder with little or any padding or by a roped shoulder “rollino”. Another peculiarity is a gentle pleating that occurs at the top of the sleeve crown. The breast pocket “a barchetta” (little boat), a slightly curved breast pocket that resembles a small sailboat, is another typical characteristic of Italian suits and both Neapolitan and Roman styles make use of it. The Roman style resembles the shoulder of the British style but it is characterised by a structured, slightly padded shoulder and the crown is lifted. This is giving a more formal aspect to the Roman style versus the Neapolitan style.
