How did Prince Charles start his yearly visit to Romania?
Prince Charles of Wales started his visit to Romania by meeting President Klaus Iohannis in Bucharest, on Sunday, May 31. Then he went to Transylvania to visit his famous guesthouses in Valea Zalanului and Viscri.
His first stop was at Valea Zalanului, in Covasna county, where he has one of his guesthouses. He went out for a short walk in the forest with his friend, Count Tibor Kalnoky, who has helped him renovate the mansions.
After a two-hour walk, Prince Charles had the difficult task to judge a mowing contest between four local teams, according to Digi 24 news station, which followed the royal visitor through the day. After the contest, a few locals entertained Prince Charles with traditional songs.
On Monday, the heir to the British throne was supposed to visit his other guesthouse in Viscri, in Brasov county.
The locals in Valea Zalanului and Viscri have become accustomed to Prince Charles’ visits, as he has been going to his estates in Transylvania each year at the end of May or the beginning of June.
Prince Charles of Wales bought two properties in rural Romania in 2006 through his Mihai Eminescu Trust foundation. He restored them and turned them into guesthouses and has been visiting them almost every year since then.
