Prolific Romanian film maker Sergiu Nicolaescu dies at 82

Famous Romanian director and actor Sergiu Nicolaescu died this morning (January 3 ) in a Bucharest hospital, after going though a peritonitis surgery. The 82-year old Romanian director had been admitted to the Elias hospital on December 26 and went through surgery two days later. According to the hospital, the surgery came on top of “known chronicle and benign digestive disease”. The peritonitis was discovered during surgery and was solved using the laparoscope.

Nicolaescu had ended his four – year mandate as a Senator in the Romanian Parliament in December, and his last public message had been a Good bye one. He had not applied for another mandate, and he wanted to spend the little time he had left doing what he loved best: film.

Sergiu Nicolaescu was one of the most prolific actors and directors in Romania, with over 60 feature films, many of which historic movies. He was also a script writer and a film producer. He started directing films in the late 60s, and was very active in recent years as well. One of his latest movies is called 'The last corrupt' (Ultimul corupt) and was launched in the beginning of 2012.

Nicolaescu, a known figure in the 1989 Revolution in Romania, started his political career in 1990, when he became an MP for the first time. He has been a Senator ever since, except the 2004-2008 mandate. He was member of the Culture Commissions in the Senate and during his last mandate he led the Culture Commission in the Parliament.
