Romanian prosecutors, no longer allowed to give details about investigations

08 June 2018

The special parliamentary committee in charge with changing the justice laws and criminal codes, led by social democrat MP and former justice minister Florin Iordache, approved on Thursday, June 7, several important amendments to the criminal procedure code.

One such amendment provides that prosecutors will no longer be allowed to communicate information related to criminal investigations. They won’t even be allowed to say what are their charges against a prosecuted person, local News.ro reported.

Other amendments introduce more restrictive conditions for preventive arrest and limit the period in which denouncements can be made to six months since the crime was committed.

The committee also introduced an amendment that allows people with final convictions to ask for a revision of their sentence if the judge that ruled in their case did not also sign the motivation. This provision would allow Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader Liviu Dragnea to ask for a revision of the two-year probation sentence he got in the referendum case.
