One of Romania’s most famous monasteries gets EUR 2.5 mln EU funds for restoration

17 August 2015

The European Commission will provide EUR 2.5 million worth of EU funds for the restoration of the Putna Monastery, one of the most important holy places in Romania. The total cost of the rehabilitation work is EUR 3.3 million.

The project is 80% completed and will be finished at the end of October this year, according to Corina Cretu, the European Commissioner for Regional Policies. Once the project is finalized, it should lead to a higher number of tourists, Cretu said.

The Putna Monastery is located in Bucovina, in northern Romania, in an idyllic valley surrounded by forests. Moldavian prince Stefan cel Mare/Stephen the Great had the monastery built after conquering the Chilia citadel (nowadays in Ukraine), in 1466. The monastery, which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was consecrated in 1470.

Stephen the Great, who died in 1504, was buried at Putna.

Stephen the Great also built the Voronet Monastery, one of the most beautiful painted monasteries in Romania, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
