Remittances from Romanian workers abroad reach USD 38.8 billion in five years
Romanian workers' remittances reached USD 38.8 billion in the last five years, with 2007 and 2008 being the most productive years for the nationals working abroad, according to a survey from the World Bank. In 2009, Romanian workers sent USD 4.9 billion from abroad, the equivalent of 4.4 percent of the gross domestic product, the data showed. The World Bank estimates total worker remittances would reach USD 4.5 billion in 2010.
According to the survey, 2.7 million Romanians currently work abroad, namely 13.1 percent of the country's population.
