Govt. approves renovation of Bucharest's Sala Palatului concert venue

21 December 2017

Romania’s Government has approved the refurbishing of the Sala Palatului concert venue in Bucharest with EUR 30 million.

Revamping Bucharest’s main convert venue is needed so that it continues to host concerts during the Enescu Festival and other artistic events in optimal conditions. Famous conductors have complained about bad conditions at concerts they held there.

The renovation project will be financed through a 20-year loan worth EUR 180 million from the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB), reports Profit.ro.

The concert venue will be transferred from Romania's State Patrimony Administration RA-APPS to the Culture Ministry. The Government has already approved the transfer. The ministry has given up the idea of building a new concert hall on the site of the current Leonida Garages historic building. Instead it will radically refurbish the Sala Palatului concert venue.

CEB experts carried out two evaluation missions in Romania in 2016 and 2017. In principle, they are willing to give the Government a loan of about EUR 180 million to finance the renovation of Sala Palatului, the National History Museum of Romania as well as the Theater and Opera House in Cluj.
