07 July 2011

A flag of Romanian king Stephen the Great (Stefan cel Mare), recovered by the Romanian state from the Zografu monastery in Greece, in 1917, and restored for more than seven years, was presented Wednesday at the National Museum of History (MNIR) in Bucharest. The flag will be displayed throughout the month of July, during the "exhibit of the month" series of micro-exhibitions.

Along with the flag of Stephen the Great, the micro-exhibition organized in the MNIR foyer also includes some information about restoring the flag and his recovery, including documents from the official ceremony that took place at Sorbonne in 1917, when the Romanian Kingdom recovered the flag.

In spring 1917, when Romania was in the war, through the effort the Romanian General Consul in Thessaloniki, G.C. Ionescu, and the French General, Maurice Sarrail, commander of the allied armies of Thessaloniki, the Romanian Kingdom recovered this object from Zografu Monastery on Mount Athos.

Stephen the Great was born in 1433 in Borzesti and was king of Moldavia between 1457 and 1504.
