German retailer Rewe recently re-branded its Penny Market stores in Romania as XXL Mega Discount, placing all its stores in Romania under a single brand. The company, which has been running stores in Romania since 2001, has six XXL Mega Discounts shops and 136 Penny Market units in the country.

Stores in Romania have not only been re-branded, but also reorganized, according to the company.

In 2011, Rewe group had a turnover of EUR 48 billion, out of which EUR 35 billion on its home market, Germany. It runs 15,700 stores, with 11,000 of them on its domestic market. Penny is the discount brand of Rewe, and runs 3,700 stores in Germany, Bulgaria, Italy, Austria, Romania, Hungary and Czech Republic, with a turnover of EUR 10 billion in 2011. With a turnover of EUR 1.1 billion, the Czech Republic is the largest foreign market for Penny. Rewe also runs stores under the Billa brand, which is also present in Romania.
