Tour guides in Roman soldier costumes greet visitors at new museum in Romania

Tour guides dressed like Roman soldiers will walk visitors through the new Roman museum in the central Romanian city of Alba – Iulia. Including essential elements of the Roman Apulum Castrum, the new museum is hosted by the Alba Carolina citadel in Alba Iulia. It benefited from EUR 3.5 million in EU funding, which helped set it up.

Visitors will see, among others, the treasury room that hosted the Legion’s money, the officer’s area, as well as a Roman heating installation called hypocaust. The museum, called Principia after the most imposing building in the former Roman Castrum, also features archeological vestiges in its yard.

It is open daily, Monday to Sunday, between 09,00 and 21,00. Ticket prices are RON 10 for adults and RON 5 for children above 6 and teenagers. The museum opened last week-end, when Alba - Iulia also hosted the Apulum Roman Festival, which opened the touristic season in the citadel.

The Alba Iulia Citadel was built in the early 18th century on a former medieval fortification, which has also been erected on a the Gemina 13th Legion Roman Castrum.
