16 February 2017

With exports of EUR 57 billion in 2016, at a GDP of EUR 169 billion, Romania ranked 16th in the European Union’s exporters ranking.

Countries with a similar GDP, such as the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia ranked much higher.

Last year, Romania was part of a small group of EU member states whose imports increased faster than the exports. The imports grew by 7% to EUR 67 billion whereas the exports rose by 5% to EUR 57 billion.

Most EU countries increased their exports more than the imports. The Czech Republic, a country with 10 million inhabitants and a GDP slightly above that of Romania, increased its exports by 3% to EUR 147 billion whereas its imports rose by 1% to EUR 128 billion. Polish exports went up by 2% to EUR 183 billion whereas the imports increased by 1% to EUR 178 billion.

Hungary increased its exports by 4% to EUR 92 billion whereas imports went up by 2% to EUR 84 billion. Germany was EU’s top exporter, with exports of EUR 1.21 billion.
