Romania is guest country at 2018 Madrid Book Fair
Romania will be the guest country at the 77th edition of the Madrid Book Fair, which takes place in the Spanish capital between May 25 and June 10, 2018.
The over 350 stalls of the fair attract more than 2 million visitors each year throughout the 17-day event, according to the organizers.
The event, the largest literature-focused one in Spain, has been taking place in Madrid’s Retiro Park yearly, without interruption, since 1967. Its first edition was in 1933, and a break followed between 1937 and 1944 because of the Spanish Civil War. Since 1982 the Spanish royal family traditionally attends the fair, or inaugurates it. Romania first attended the Madrid Book Fair in 2012.
An increasing number of Romanian authors has been translated into Spanish in recent years, among them Mircea Cărtărescu, Dan Lungu, Filip Florian, Lucian Dan Teodorvici.
In 2018, Romania will also be a guest country at the Leipzig Book Fair, in Germany. Last year, Romania was a guest country at the Beijing Book Fair, where the autobiography Step by Step (Pas cu pas) of president Klaus Iohannis was launched in Chinese translation. In 2015, it was the guest country at the Istanbul Book Fair.
An estimated 200,000 Romanians were living in 2016 in the Community of Madrid, which encompasses the capital Madrid, according to El Pais.
