Romania attracts foreign direct investments of EUR 50 bln in last 11 years

Total foreign direct investments in Romania between 2000 and 2011 exceed EUR 50 billion, according to data from Romania's Central Bank (BNR).

Last year, Romania attracted some EUR 1.9 billion in foreign direct investment, a fall to around the same level as in 2003 (1.94 billion). In 2010 the total amount of direct foreign investments in Romania was EUR 2.2 billion, down from 3.4 billion reported the year before. The peak was recorded in 2008, when Romania attracted some EUR 9.5 billion in direct foreign investments.

The Netherlands was the top foreign investor in Romania, followed by Austria, Germany, France, and China.

According to Romania’s Central Bank, the direct investments made by foreigners in Romania stood at EUR 23 million in January 2012, and covered 62.2 percent of the current account deficit. In January 2011, the foreign direct investments in Romania stood at EUR 376 million.
