Romania becomes cheap and easy divorce tourism destination for foreigners

15 August 2011

An increasing number of foreign couples come to Romania just to get divorced, as it is easier than in their home countries. They take advantage of the EU legislation, which recognizes the divorce in other countries. A recent article in the New York Times tells the story of Italian couples who have established short-term residence in Romania only to get divorced, as the legal system in Italy doesn't allow rapid divorce processes.

In Romania, all a couple has to do is sign in front of a notary, for couples without children. The two have 30 days to withdraw the divorce request and after that, if the divorce is consensual, the notary will end the marriage. The system has been changed and allows couples to get divorced in front of notaries, instead of going to court. Even in court, the procedure takes only a couple of months. Law firms abroad have taken advantage of this and have started t offer such services to foreign nationals, according to the New York Times.

In Italy, the divorce is only possible after the three-year separation period. Factoring in the legal process, the divorce can take up to four years. If the split is not consensual, it can easily take 10. “Spain, France and Britain are also divorce destinations, but Romania is known as cheaper and easier,” according to NY Times.

“The company that arranged the Bologna couple’s divorce, Divorzio Comodo, meaning “easy divorce,” offers all-inclusive Romanian quickie divorces, including airfare, starting at about $5,000,” the articles goes on. In this area, London is called the divorce capital of the world, even for Americans.
