Romania, Bulgaria sign memorandum for new bridge over Danube

Romania's prime minister Nicolae Ciuca and his Bulgarian counterpart Kiril Petkov announced that a memorandum was signed for the construction of a second bridge over the Danube between Giurgiu and Ruse.

Nicolae Ciuca explained that the Bulgarian side wants more bridges over the Danube between the two countries.

"The Bulgarian side has proposed to look into the possibility of building more bridges, and we have agreed to set up a task force by the end of next week, which will include specialists from the Ministry of Transport and, as the discussions have evolved and we have agreed that they are common topics and in terms of energy, we have decided that this task force should also include specialists from the Ministries of Energy in both countries," Nicolae Ciuca said, according to News.ro.

The Bulgarian part of the existing bridge between Giurgiu and Ruse will undergo maintenance works, and for this period, it was agreed to open a ferry crossing point.

At their April 29 meeting, the two also discussed kicking out the project of dredging the Danube and enrolling the section in the European program Fast Danube.

The prime ministers of Romania and Bulgaria also discussed the agenda for the next joint meeting of the two countries' Governments, expected for September.
