Romania changes train classification and ups ticket prices to comply with EU rules

Romania's Transport Ministry will change the names of Intercity, Rapid, Accelerat and Personal traisn in the country from December this year, aligning these to the European legislation. Romania will thus have Intercity IC, Interregio IR and Regio R trains, as well as higher train ticket prices.

The new Intercity IC trains will have the subcategories Intercity Eurocity IC-EC- operating in important cities, Intercity Euronight IC-EN- in important cities, for night traffic, Intercity IC- between important cities at a speed of around 60 km/hours and Intercity Night IC-N- between important cities, during the night. The Interregio IR trains will come in two categories: Interregio IR- average speed of 45 km / hour and Interregio Night IR-N- night trains, average speed of 40 km/hour.

The Regio R trains will be classified as Regio Express R-E- on smaller geographic areas, average speed of 35 km/hours, Regio R and Region Urban/Suburban R-U/R-S- dedicated to suburban commuters.

The new ticket prices are yet to be announced.
