Romania could introduce new tax for small hotels, restaurants

18 February 2016

Romania could introduce a new tax at the end of March, according to a draft project adopted by the Senate on Monday.

This would be a fixed annual tax paid by hotels, bars, and restaurants with a turnover of up to EUR 5 million and less than 250 employees.

According to the bill, the fixed tax will be calculated for each unit based on certain formulas and taking into consideration factors such as the size of the unit, the area where it operates, as well as the number of accommodation places it provides.

The authorities have tried to introduce this tax several times in the past. The bill has reached the Parliament in an emergency procedure. If the Chamber of Deputies also approves the bill, it will enter into force on March 31, reports local Digi24.

Finance Minister Anca Dragu said that she didn’t agree to the new tax. The large hotel and restaurant operators would pay less whereas the small companies would have to pay more, she explained.
