Romania creates commission to look into alleged German debt from the 40s
The Romanian Senate has created a special commission which will analyze Germany's alleged debt towards Romania, stemming from the 1940. Romanian economist Radu Golban says he has discovered a debt which is officially recognized by German authorities. His findings have been backed up by two senators, Dan Voiculescu and Teodor Melescanu, who have brought the matter forward in the Parliament.
The alleged debt is based on an agreement signed in 1935 by the Romanian Central Bank and the German Compensation House in Berlin. The agreement covered the regulation of payments between the 'German Empire and the Romanian kingdom', according to the Romanian economist. Based on this agreement and on a decision from 1940, the debt was of 'over a million imperial marks', according to Golban, who didn't mention the current value of this debt. Records of this debt have been found in the German Archives.
Germany is currently one of the key players in deciding the fate of Greece and of the euro zone, and has yet to decide on offering a bailout package to Greece.
