Western Romania Dacian sites welcome more visitors in 2017
The Dacian sites in the western Romania county of Hunedoara received a higher number of tourists last year.
Sarmizegetusa Regia, the capital of the Dacians prior to the wars with the Roman Empire, received 70,829 tourists, up 16% compared to 2016. At the same time, Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, the capital of the Roman province of Dacia, and the Museum of the Dacian and Roman Civilization in Deva received 152,170 tourists, up 8.69% on 2016.
Meanwhile, also in Hunedoara county, the Corvinilor Castle was the most visited tourist site. The castle welcomed 333,334 tourists last year, up 10% on 2016.
The Gold Museum in Brad attracted 18,126 visitors, 16% more than in 2016.
Overall, 852,000 people visited the tourists sites of the Hunedoara county, up 11% on 2016, according to the Hunedoara Agency for Economic and Social Development (ADEH).
The agency announced it was planning to focus this year on promoting the thermal spa resort of Geoagiu Băi.
“We have noticed that there is an influx of some 3,000 tourists there at the end of the week. This shows the resort is the main site in Hunedoara county where tourists spend several days,” Radu Barb, the ADEH director, said.
