Romania sees highest increase in government employment in EU

Romania, Hungary and Slovenia recorded the highest increases in government employment in the European Union between 2000 and 2016, according to Eurostat data.

Overall, in the EU government employment varied between 15% and 17% of all employees in the analyzed period.

The highest shares of employees working for the state were recorded in Sweden (29% of the total employment), Denmark (28%), Finland (25%) and Estonia (23%). Lithuania, France and Hungary also had 22% of all employees working for the state. The lowest shares were in Germany (10%), Luxembourg (12%), the Netherlands (13%), and Italy (14%).

Romania had a government employment of slightly over 15%, based on 2015 data. Government employment includes civil servants and other government employees at national, regional and local level as well as armed forces. Not all EU member states have the same methodology for calculating this indicator.
