Romania harvests smaller wheat crop due to heavy rains and flooding

12 August 2010

Romania's wheat crop has been affected by floods and will stay below the expectations this season, although at a higher level than last year, according to the Agriculture Ministry. The country is expected to harvest 5.7 million tonnes of wheat, 1 million tonnes below the expected level. Most of the crop has already been harvested from 98 percent of the land. But not all the harvest will be viable for bread manufacture – only 3 million tonnes will be directed to this, the rest being used as fodder, due to the heavy rains. Flooding, heavy rains and in some areas drought have affected other countries as well. In fact, most of the main cereal producers in the Black Sea area have been affected and had to decrease their export plans. Romania sold abroad 2.3 million tonnes of wheat, out of which two thirds in Spain, Italy, Iraq and Syria.
