Romania plans to break inefficient highway company into two entities
Romania’s National Highways Company – CNADNR will be broken into two separate entities, one of which will manage new highway investment projects while the other one will handle the maintenance of the current road network, former transport minister Dan Costescu said on Thursday, according to local Digi24.ro.
CNADNR spent only EUR 34 million on highway projects in the first five months of this year, which is only 8% of the EUR 400 million budget for the whole year. CNADNR has also failed to sign new highway contracts, according to local Ziarul Financiar.
This shows the inefficiency of this mammoth company, which has an annual budget of close to EUR 1 billion, half of which should be used for highway projects.
CNADNR’s poor results have determined Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos to dismiss transport minister Dan Costescu and name a new minister, Dorin Buse, who previously worked in the private sector for French group Renault.
