Less than half of Romania’s houses connected to sewage systems
Less than half of Romania’s population, namely 47.7%, lived in houses connected to sewage systems at the end of 2015, according to the National Statistics Institute (INS) data.
Even less people lived in houses connected to wastewater collecting systems equipped with sewage treatment plants, namely 45.7% of the total population.
By comparison, 99% of the Dutch population, 95% of the Austrians, and 65% of the Poles lived in houses connected to sewage systems, according to Eurostat. In Bulgaria, 75% of the population had access to a sewer system.
Romania lost EU funds for environment worth EUR 1.7 billion during the 2007-2013 programming period, according to Ziarul Financiar. The money could have been used for the expansion of sewer systems, wastewater treatment, and ecological landfills.
