Romania imports food, despite agricultural potential
Romania has a huge agricultural potential, but imports a lot of agricultural products and food, said Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.
A quarter of Romania’s employed population works in agriculture, but only 4.7% of the GDP comes from agriculture.
“Romania has some of the best apples in the world, but imports 80% of the apples,” Iohannis said at the opening of Indagra, the biggest agricultural fair in Romania, reports local Mediafax.
The main problem is the lack of infrastructure. Romania should maximize the use of structural funds, said Iohannis. The Romanian agriculture should become competitive, and should not depend on weather or other circumstances.
France’s ambassador to Romania Francois Saint-Paul also spoke about Romania’s big agricultural potential, especially in the bio cultures segment.
