Transylvanian-born Ioan Slavici (1848-1925) was a writer and journalist, as well as a member of the Junimea literary society, like many writers of his time.
His most famous novels are Mara and 'Moara cu noroc' ( The luck mill).
Slavici was the director of the newspaper Ziua before the First World War and was supporting Romaniațs neutrality in the war.
He was incarcerated five times because of his articles. He is considered one of the classical Romanian writers and his works are studied in Romanian schools.
