Ion Luca Caragiale is Romania's best know playwright commonly referred to as I.L. Caragiale. He was also a short story writer, poet, theater manager, political commentator and journalist.

He is considered a leading representative of local humor, with many satirical works targeting certain political movements and the morals of the epoch. Caragiale (1852-1912), like many writers of his time, was member of the Junimea literary society, being one of its main representatives.

He started with poems and humorous chronicles but ended up writing theater plays that are part of Romania's literary heritage: O noapte furtunoasă (A stormy night), O scrisoare pierdută (A lost letter) and D'ale Carnavalului (Carnival Scenes).

His plays and short stories are filled with political satire and romantic intrigues. Caragiale spent the last eight years of his life in Berlin, after receiving an inheritance.
