Romania lowers car tax by 25% but applies it to older cars too

01 September 2011

Romania has lowered the car tax by 25 percent but has expended it to include the sale of cars produced before 2007. The change has happened after the European Justice Court had deemed the tax illegal, as it was creating a disadvantage to sell second-hand cars from other countries to Romania.

Romanians who have paid the higher tax starting July 2008 can ask for the different back. This car tax, also called the car pollution tax, will be paid for new or second hand cars, produced locally or abroad, but registered for the first time in Romania, as well as for cars registered before 2007 which have not been applied such a tax before.

The tax is calculated based on several criteria, such as the type of engine, the capacity, the CO2 emissions and the state of the car.
