Romania may produce Jeep military vehicles

25 May 2016

Italian-American group Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the company that owns the Jeep brand, is interested in signing a partnership with a Romanian company for producing the military vehicles 4x4 Jeep J8 in Romania.

Romania’s state defense contractor Romarm announced the cooperation proposal on May 24.

The targeted production site is Uzina Mecanica Bucuresti, a military equipment factory that is part of Romarm, which has been underused in recent years due to the lack of orders from the defense sector. However, this may change as Romania has committed to allotting 2% of its GDP to defense and the Romanian Army will start an equipping program.

Romarm is the main producer and direct exporter of military gear in Romania. The company was founded in 2000 through the merger of the most important factories in the Romanian defense system.

Romarm is also the main provider of military equipment and maintenance services.
