Romania – Monaco duplex auction generates some EUR 900,000 in art sales
Romanians and foreigners spent over EUR 700,000 on Romanian art and EUR 185,000 on jewelry last weekend, during an Artmark auction held simultaneously in Romania and in Monaco. The auction had a 98 percent take up rate.
The central piece of the auction, the Nicolae Tonitza painting 'Doua surori' (Two sisters) was sold for EUR 125,000.
The painting “Înserare la Balcic” (Balcic dusk') by Dumitru Ghiaţă was bought by a participant in Monte Carlo, who paid EUR 14,500 for the piece, initially estimated at half the price.
Another seven painting lots were sold for prices between EUR 25,000 and EUR 60,000.
The most expensive jewelry piece was the Leo Cut diamond ring, sold at EUR 79,000. Another highlight was the Bucherer emerald Cut diamond ring, at EUR 47,000 (in picture). A pair of white gold diamond ear rings sold for EUR 17,500.
“Romanian art is not minor, but rather closed. We need visibility and re-affirmation, and Artmark takes on the repositioning process for Romanian art abroad, with these first cross-border auctions – Chisinau – Bucharest and Mamaia – Monaco,” said Manuela Plăpcianu, CEO Artmark.
